Ingredients

* 1 cup half-and-half

* 3 large eggs

* 2 tablespoons honey, warmed in microwave for 20 seconds, or substitute with tablespoon of vanilla.

* 1/4 teaspoon salt

* 8 (1/2-inch) slices day-old or stale country loaf, brioche or challah bread, the bread makes the difference really.

* 4 tablespoons butter

Directions

In medium size mixing bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, eggs, honey, and salt. You may do this the night before. When ready to cook, pour custard mixture into a pie pan and set aside.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Dip bread into mixture, allow to soak for 30 seconds on each side, and then remove to a cooling rack that is sitting in a sheet pan, and allow to sit for 1 to 2 minutes.

Over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a 10-inch nonstick saute pan. Place 2 slices of bread at a time into the pan and cook until golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan and place on rack in oven for 5 minutes. Repeat with all 8 slices. Serve immediately with maple syrup, whipped cream or fruit.Basic French Toast Recipe?

French Toast

INGREDIENTS:

4 eggs

1 tbsp sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk

10 slices white bread

butter

maple syrup or other syrup

Break eggs into a wide, shallow bowl or pie plate; beat lightly with a fork. Stir in sugar, salt, and milk.

Over medium-low heat, heat griddle or skillet coated with a thin layer of butter or margarine.

Place the bread slices, one at a time, into the bowl or plate, letting slices soak up egg mixture for a few seconds, then carefully turn to coat the other side.

Soak/coat only as many slices as you will be cooking at one time.

Transfer bread slices to griddle or skillet, heating slowly until bottom is golden brown. Turn and brown the other side. Serve French toast hot with butter and syrup
I like to use a good challah bread if you can find it but beat one egg with a 1/2 cup of half and half (gives it a richer buttery flavor) and a tsp or more of cinnamon (I never measure..... just throw in a good amount that won't be overpowering) and finally a dash of vanilla to taste. Heat a frying pan to medium heat and put in a tbs of butter (the bread will soak it up). You can lower the heat if your butter starts to burn. Lightly dip (Don't Soak!) your bread in the mixture and throw it in your frying pan. Don't mess with it. Maybe 5 min or less on one side and two on the other. Try to let it brown and only flip it once. If you keep the heat low it will cook thoroughly without burning. Then serve with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and a good maple syrup. I know you said no fruit but strawberries are coming into season and are absolutely amazing when dipped in the leftover sugar, syrup and butter sauce left on your empty plate. And yes, I'm fat :P
When I make french toast, I break an egg into a square cake pan, add milk until it goes up the side about 1/2'; and give it a stir. I then sprinkle on some cinnamon and give it a stir. Then I dip my pieces of bread into it, turn them over, and place them on the hot buttered grill. I brown them on both sides and then cut each slice in half on the diagonal, lay one slightly over the other, butter them and then sprinkle them with powdered sugar. Then pass the syrup.

Hope that helps.
for great french toast you need to start with great bread. My choice is deli fresh crusty French bread. I take two eggs and beat them in a large bowl, then whisk in a little milk until the color turns a nice pale yellow, maybe about 1/4 cup at most. Add some vanilla, about a teaspoon or tablespoon, and the same amount of cinnamon, stir it up a little. Dip your bread in and coat both sides well, then put it on the griddle for a few minutes on each side. I serve my French toast with real butter, warm real maple syrup, and powdered sugar, and thick cut hickory smoked bacon on the side.
Take 2 eggs, 1 tbsp. of whole milk, and a 1/2 tsp. more or less of cinnamon. Mix it together in bowl. Melt butter in frying pan, when it becomes hot (not too hot- you don't want it to burn), dip bread into egg mixture on both sides. Fry toast on each side until golden brown. Place on plate and sift (with a strainer) powdered sugar. Eat plain or with maple syrup. :)
1/2 cup milk

1 egg

dash salt

Beat that together. Add vanilla or cinnamon (just a teeny bit) if you want.

The powdered sugar is for AFTER cooking - just sprinkle it over the toast when you're ready to serve.
